Pallack dropped his backpack, took off his shoes and stepped into the cold water. It felt wonderful on his blistered feet, which had gotten worse after today's walking. He thought it would be a good idea to make a lean-to and rest them tonight so they could develop into callouses before he kept going, they had all disappeared after staying at his last stop with the new people he had met. He loved almost everything about being a drifter, but this was not one of them. He stood and stared across the lake at the trees barely lit by moonlight. Wait... was someone out there?

Claire's violet eyes were closed as she concentrated on staying on top of the water's surface. Her powers of freezing things was still not that great, so it took all her concentration to maintain her balance.
She tentatively opened her eyes and blinked at where she was. Right smack in the middle of the lake. She looked down and thought she saw a flick of a tail. Not the tail of a fish, but something much larger.
Claire got so distracted by what she had seen that her concentration was lost. She was about to fall feet first into the water, but she panicked. The next thing she knew, the whole surface of the lake was frozen. "Oops," she said with a nervous laugh. "Hope no one was in the lake."
She looked around and gasped when she saw someone who seemed to be sitting on the ice. She ran over and discovered the someone to be a man who was trapped in the ice. Completely surprised at seeing someone else she shouted, "I'm sorry for that! I didn't realize anyone else was out here!"

As Pallack was off in dreamland, he felt a sudden chill in his feet. He looked down to find... that his feet were frozen in the water? He pulled up as hard as he could, and luckily for him, only the surface was frozen, so he broke free just fine. However, his shins were bruised from the freezing, but it was nothing compared to what he had gone through.
What was even stranger to him was that a little girl was running straight at him. As she apologized he looked at her, perplexed. "Wait a minute, you did this?" He was still in a state of shock as to what happened and the full force of the strange occurrence was still dawning on him. "How in the world could anyone do this?"
Though he had seen strange things in his life, he had never seen anything as strange as this.

"Er...um... well...you see..." Claire trailed off not sure how to explain. She was too inexperienced at this! How was she to know how to tell a human that what he saw was nothing more than a dream. After all, she couldn't tell him she was a vampire! Could she?
"Well, first off, I'm Claire, you are?" she asked trying to be polite. Maybe if she asked him questions, he would forget. Right... like he would. Geeze, what had she gotten into!
To her embarrassment, her eyes filled up with tears and her nose got that feeling whenever she started to cry. Stress and worry always caused her to start crying. It was really annoying! "I...I'm sorry... for freezing your feet!" Claire shouted before she placed her face in the palms of her hand to cover the tears streaming down her face.

He saw her start to cry, and just like all the other times, it hurt him to see anyone cry. Murderers, innocents, anyone. Probably a fault in his character. But even so, he tried to make it better. "Trust me," he said reassuringly, "I've had much worse than frozen feet, this is nothing. But, uh, do you mind if we take this conversation to the shore? My feet are incredibly cold right now..."
He was incredibly bewildered by this. Maybe this was some sort of strange dream? He'd had strange dreams before, but none in such detail. "I'm Pallack by the way." He tried stepping closer to shore, but as his foot hit the surface of the lake, it shattered beneath him and he fell on his face, shattering the ice with a loud "Crash!"

All of the ice surrounding Pallack shattered as well and Claire fell into the water. Luckily, it only reached to her knees. She walked to the front of Pallack and put out her hand to him.
"Need a helping hand?" she asked all traces of the fact that she had been crying gone.

Pallack smiled up at her, but shook his head and pushed himself up. "I'm fine," he said, but his smile vanished as the wind blew and his cold skin became dotted by goosebumps. "Lord, it's cold..." he muttered, then walked over, opened his backpack and pulled out some dry clothes, then grabbed his backpack and began to walk off, ready to leave this strange occurrence behind him, but seeing this kind child made him change his mind. Even if she was a freak, maybe she was lost. He should try to help her find her parents.
"Hey, um, Claire," he said, "Can you wait there for five minutes? I need to change out of these cold clothes. I'll help you find your way back home if you're lost..."

"I'll wait," Claire called to him cheerfully. "But, I'm not lost, so there's really no point in helping me find my way back."
As she waited for him, she sat down on the sand and kicked her legs in the water. It seemed so harmless this close to shore, she thought absentmindedly.
She thought about Pallack, and figured that he was some type of wanderer. It was going to be hard finding a place to live out here, but she had a home with a roof over it. Should she offer? He was human though, and that could be a problem. She sighed and stood up. She could control her urges if need be, so there really was no other choice. Plus, she had to pay him back for freezing him.
"Pallack?" Claire called. "Do you need a place to stay? I can offer you my home, it is the least I can do for what I did to you."

Pallack blinked. He had been offered shelter by homeless people, middle-class citizens, Amish, but never once from a young girl. "Well, what you did really isn't that bad, and I can live out in the wilderness." He had a proud face on... that is, until he heard the wolf off in the distance, and just then his stomach rumbled. Good shelter was beginning to sound better and better. "Actually..." he said, "That sounds kind of nice. I will only be a night, and I won't take any food, I have my own."
He sighed. He must look like the most pitiful thing in the world right now. But hey, what did he have to lose?

"Good! Then we should get going now if there's nothing else you need," Claire said running over to him. She grabbed his hand and started walking in the direction of her home.
"My home isn't that far from the lake, but it's also a bit far from civilization. Because of that, I don't have much food in the fridge. So, it's a good thing you have your own," she said with a sheepish smile. She didn't really have any use for food when her main source was blood.
They soon came to a house that wasn't small, but wasn't medium size either. It was a two story house that looked out of place in the woods. Claire let go of Pallack's hand and opened the door with a key she had in her pocket. "Here's my house," she said welcoming him in.

Zizou watched the two and laughed. She loved to play tricks on the humans. She swam closer to get a better look. Her long red hair floating at her sides. She looked at the two and laughed again. "Maybe I should splash them and see what they do." She though about this with a large grin on her face, but decided to wait.
She watched the two walk away and she sighed. "Well, my fun can't last forever." She followed them along the side of the lake, staying in the deep water so they wouldn't see her that well.

He looked at in in awe. How did a house get out here, especially one like this? Well, it was here, so he may as well make use of it.
The young girl's power was still running through his mind. The ice was so strange. . . maybe it was a trick from the moonlight. But he had actually fallen through the ice, there was no mistaking that. He decided to let it drop, he had seen plenty of strange things in his travels, how was this any stranger?
He felt the rush of warm air flow over him as the door opened. It felt so good, it had been a while since he had felt the warmth of a house. He followed her in slowly, taking it all in, something he had learned to do while on beautiful forest paths.

Claire walked in after him and locked the door behind her. She saw his reaction to her home and she beamed glad to know that someone liked her house besides herself.
"So... would you like to have a look around first, or do you want to see where you'll be sleeping for the night?" she asked.

Zizou swam to the edge of the lake and there was a flash. She was human now, walking out of the water. Her red hair and dress blew in the wind, making them look like flames. She smiled and started walking through the forest with her bare feet. She knew where the house of the girl was, for she had seen it many times before.
As she walked, she started to sing, her voice trailing through the forest of the night.

He rubbed his eyes. "I think that sleep demands a bit of attention at the moment," he said groggily. "It really is a nice house though, I need to see it in full sometime. Can you show it to me tomorrow?"
He took a short glance outside and shook his head when he thought he saw something poke its head up from through the ice. He blinked again and it was gone, so he just turned back to Claire and smiled. "Lead the way," he said.
