Sister: I see you’re home early.
Brother: My boss sent me home since there was nothing to do there.
Sister: Oh, is that mine? [points to the package]
Brother: Oh yeah, that package came in the mail today.
Sister: And…?
Brother: It’s for you.
Sister: Why didn’t you say so in the first place?
Brother: I didn’t really see the point.
Sister: [glares before she takes the package into the kitchen. Some time later, she comes back the package still in her hands]
Brother: So… who was the sender?
Sister: Someone.
Brother: [eye twitch]…. What was inside it?
Sister: Something.
Brother: What exactly is something?
Sister: Why do you want to know?
Brother: Does there have to be a reason?
Sister: Yes, there does. With you, there’s always a reason.
Brother: Aw, that hurts. Seriously though, I’m just curious. [pause] So, will you tell me what was in the package?
Sister: Are Mom and Dad still at work?
Brother: Yes. [pause] Don’t change the subject!
Sister: Why not? I didn’t like the current subject that we were on.
Brother: It’s just a simple question! How hard is it to answer?!
Sister: I don’t want to answer it.
Brother: Why not?
(She glares at him and places the package on the table.)
Sister: I just don’t want to. Stop asking.
Brother: That isn’t a reasonable answer nor is it a reasonable request either.
Sister: I don’t care. Your question wasn’t reasonable.
Brother: Yes it was! Explain how it isn’t.
Sister: “Why not?” doesn’t constitute as a reasonable question.
Brother: Yes, it does, but that’s not the question I was talking about!
Sister: Your mindless babble is starting to irritate me.
Brother: “Mindless babble”? Are you trying to get me mad?
Sister: [blank stare] Is it working?
Brother: Gah!
Sister: I’m going to my room.
(She picks up her package, but her brother suddenly reaches out and grabs it at the same time.)
Brother: Let me see it!
(tugs)
Sister: No, let go!
(tugs)
Brother: No, you let go!
(tugs)
Sister: Let go!
(tugs)
Brother: No! Why don’t you?
(tugs)
Sister: It’s my package! Let go!
(tugs)
Brother: No, I’m not going to let go!
(tugs)
Sister: If you won’t, I will.
(She lets go and he falls onto the couch. She then quickly darts in and grabs the box from him.)
Sister: It’s my package! Don’t try to steal it from me!
(She stomps off to her room.)
Brother: [rubs head painfully] What was in that package?
(turns off the tv, and a perplexed look comes onto his face)
End Scene 1
Scene 2
Characters
Brother – 17
Sister – 16
Little Sister – 8
Setting
Brother’s Room and Sister’s Room
Time
Late night
(The time is night and everyone is asleep save for one person. Brother walks out from his room and sneaks into his sister’s room. He sees that she is asleep. He looks around for the package and sees it on her table. He goes over and opens it only to discover nothing inside.)
Brother: Did she already take it out?
Sister: [sits up] You know, it’s rude to enter a girl’s room without permission, especially if she’s your sister.
Brother: I thought you were asleep!
Sister: I was only pretending. I had a feeling that you were going to come by to look, so I stayed up waiting.
Brother: It’s been hours since you were supposed to have gone to bed though.
Sister: [holds up a book] I spent my time reading. What did you do?
Brother: [doesn’t say anything]
Sister: Nothing? Wow, that’s pathetic.
Brother: Shut up!
Sister: Keep it down. Mom and Dad are sleeping.
Brother: Whatever. [pause] Look, now that you’re up, can you please explain why you don’t want me to know what was inside of it?
Sister: What’s in it for me?
Brother: What?
Sister: Do I get anything out of telling you?
Brother: [considers for a moment] I’ll do your chores for two days.
Sister: A week.
Brother: That’s way too much for a simple box!
Sister: Do you want to know or not?
Brother: Yes, yes I do want to know.
Sister: Then it’s a week.
Brother: Fine, I’ll do your chores for a week.
Sister: You promise?
Brother: Yeah, I promise.
Sister: On dead Molly Lolly’s grave?
Brother: Why would I promise over a dog’s grave?
Sister: Molly Lolly was special.
Brother: Fine! I promise on dead Molly Lolly’s grave that I’ll do your chores for a week.
Sister: Okay.
Brother: Well, what’s the reason for all the secrecy?
Sister: No reason. I just felt like it.
Brother: Well, can you tell me what’s in it now?
Sister: Sure.
Brother: Well?
Sister: Nothing.
Brother: You said that you were going to tell me!
Sister: I did. Nothing!
Brother: Do you mean to say there was nothing in the package?
Sister: Yes, can you leave now? I want to get some sleep.
Brother: You mean I wasted my evening and a promise over nothing?
Sister: [blinks in confusion] What did you do in the evening?
Brother: I kept wondering about what was in the package.
Sister: Whatever. Anyway, get out. I need my sleep.
(Brother walks out while shaking his head.)
Brother: What a waste of an evening… and a week of choreless-ness.
(He walks back into his room and goes to bed. In her room, the sister suddenly smiled and reached under her pillow. She pulled out a small box and held it in her hands.)
Sister: He’s so gullible. [quietly laughs]
Little Sister: [crawls out from under the bed] Yeah, he is. Why did you lie to him?
Sister: I didn’t lie. He asked me what was in the box at the time and I told him. There was nothing.
Little Sister: Wow, that was really clever of you sis! What was in the box though?
Sister: Candy and other assorted treats.
Little Sister: Ohh! Can I have some?
Sister: [opens the box and hands over a piece of candy] Here, don’t eat it until tomorrow though. Also, don’t tell your brother. You know how he is.
Little Sister: [happily takes the candy] Yeah! He’s a candy-holic!
Sister: Right, and that’s why we hide all the candy and sweets in the house from him.
Little Sister: I won’t tell anyone sis! Good night!
Sister: Night!
(Little Sister leaves and Sister puts the box away before going to sleep.)
